Make Sure a Dog is Right Fur Your Lifestyle
We all believe cuddle time with a Dog is going to work its way into our lifestyles with ease and odds are, we’re probably right about that. It’s often the things we don’t find ourselves daydreaming about when it comes to living that Dog life which are the most important.
Can you picture yourself getting up at 6:00 AM every day to walk your Dog before you go to work? Are you ready to adjust your travel plans to accommodate your Dog? Do you have other Fur Babies that will tolerate this new Dog? Are you willing to take the patience to work with this Fur Baby so they will smoothly fit into your family and family of Fur Babies? Ask yourself the following questions before adopting and make sure those answers are a solid YES. If not, figure out how you can adjust your lifestyle and commit to giving your Dog a happy, healthy, life.
Ask Yourself:
- Dogs require plenty of activity every day, throughout the day. What part's of my day can I incorporate walking my Dog and taking it to the Dog Park fur plenty of excercise?
- What does my grooming schedule look like fur my Dog? Will i need to take it to the groomers or can I do it myself? Can I afford it either way?
- Am I prepared to support my Dog in emergency situations? Am i financially stable enough to make room fur Pet Insurance and or unexpected vet bills?
- Do I have enough space fur my Dog? Have I done enough research about the living requiements fur my desired breed to thrive in?

Look to Your Local Shelter Instead of a Breeder
Before you start preparing your home, buying food, and products, you’ll want to first understand the type of Dog you’re adopting. (The breed of Dog you want may not fit your lifestyle.) Once you know you can fit the needs of a typical Dog into your lifestyle, you’ll want to reach out to your local shelter to find a potential Dog.
From there, it’s time to learn about that specific Dog. Your local shelter may know about any health requirements so you can anticipate medical bills, dietary needs, and more. You need to research space and activity requirements based on the breed. Tell your shelter about your lifestyle and the type of Dog you’re looking fur so you can work together on finding a match.
There is so much more to learn before adopting your Fur Baby, so sign up fur classes at Pet Care Basics 101 to become a Certified Pet Parent.
Ask Your Shelter:
- About your desired Dog's current health standing and any medical issues. The Fur Baby could have special needs that you'll want to make sure you're prepared to take on.
- Get to know the personality of the Dog. Make sure it will mesh well with your needs and household.
- Ask how regularly they exercise the Dog and about the best routine post-adoption fur that breed.
- Understand dietary needs, what type of food they're on, and if you can realisticlly keep up with this brand financially
- Go over the Dog's grooming routine and requirements to make sure you're capable of keeping up with their needs.
We Recommend:
- Raised Feeding Bowls. These are a great way to make sure your Fur Baby can ingest food safely and comfortably as well as water!
- Comfortable bedding. Make sure you've got plenty of comfortable lounging options around!
- Rope Toys. A game of tug of war is a great way to keep your Dog's mouth clean.
- Harness Leash. Your typical collar and leash isn't ideal fur all Dogs. Consider a harness for optimal comfort fur both you and your Dog.
Prepare Your Home
After you’re sure you can work a Dog into your lifestyle and you’ve met with a shelter on a specific Dog, you’re ready to start investing in your home.
